The south west of England offers exhilarating natural riding in some of the most stunning scenery you will see in the world. Ride from sea to source, rugged open moorland to picturesque fishing village. Pick your way along ancient woodland single-track giving way to lush green fields and ancient sunken lanes. Nowhere else in Britain will you find more diversity within a short ride.

We will soon be showing a database of official sites where you can go to ride in the south west.  If you own or manage such a site please submit a listing so that we include it in our records.

One of the most important quality issues when promoting off-road cycling is to grade the routes so that users know what to expect, and if it is suitable for their level of ability. We expect all trail centres to use the International Mountain Bike Association Trail Grading system.

Family & Beginner
Off-road cycling is a great activity for all the family and is often appeals far more to youngsters than a walk in the countryside. Better children's trailers for carrying babies, tag along bikes for children and flat easy trails all make the experience totally enjoyable for the adults as well. Don't be put off by images of lycra-clad keen cyclists, just get out and enjoy yourselves!

Countryside Routes
The public rights of way network offers immense riding potential for those who are adept with a map. With two National Parks and 14 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the region the exceptional quality of landscape is supported with well managed and signed public rights of way. Cyclists can use Public Bridleways and Byways, but not Footpaths.

Maps showing all cycling-legal off-road paths in both Exmoor and Dartmoor are available. These maps have been graded using the IMBA grading system so that the user can plan their route knowing how severe the riding ahead will be. Click on Exmoor or Dartmoor to buy the relevant map online.

Downhill
A few sites exist that cater for downhill mountain biking. Search for these sites by County using the online database.

Trials / North Shore
A few sites exist that cater for north-shore and riding. Search for these sites by County using the online database. There are no trials specific sites at present, although we hope to be able to formalise some areas when developing new or improved trail hubs.
